Calvary Baptist Church of Glenwood
Calvary’s story began in 1980. While serving as a volunteer Chaplin at the Joliet Correctional Center in Joliet, Illinois under the tutelage of Rev. Beasley Reynolds, Senior Chaplin, Rev. Carl K. Manson accepted God’s call to organize the Calvary Baptist Church in Glenwood, Illinois. God’s assignment for Pastor Manson was to gather the people together for Christ and minister to the needs of the Glenwood community.
The organizational service was held at the home of Pastor Manson on November 29, 1980. Those present included Pastor Manson’s wife, Mrs. Beverly Manson, his daughters Marsha and Monica; Fletcher and Judith Smith and their children Fletcher Jr. and Stephanie; Rev. and Mrs. J.C. Smith of Bethlehem Temple Baptist Church, Harvey, Illinois; James and Gloria Rush; Viola Means; Corine Smith; Essic M. Fennoy; and Leroy Bell. Rev. Smith conducted the organizational service. The Manson and Smith (Fletcher & Judith) families were the first official members of Calvary.
Calvary’s first worship service was held at the Hickory Bend School in Glenwood on January 4, 1981 with approximately 175 people in attendance. Thirteen people united with Calvary that day. Calvary’s first Baptismal service was held on March 21, 1981 at Progressive Baptist Church, Ford Heights, Illinois. At this service, 29 new believers were baptized. In a moving and spirit-filled service, as each candidate was presented to be baptized, the candidate’s father or a husband read a scripture.
Under Pastor Manson’s leadership, several service programs were organized and activated, which ministered to the needs of the community and a building fund was started.
The fruition of the building fund came to pass under Rev. David Bigbsy, who was installed as Calvary’s 2nd Pastor on August 7, 1994. On July 8, 1995 Calvary members marched to their new home and present location. Calvary continued to grow under Rev. Bigsby’s leadership. Calvary experienced increased membership, two worship services were established, and an increase in the number of Associate Ministers, ministries, and Deacons. Rev. Bigsby’s leadership and vision enabled Calvary to move forward into the 21st century. Rev. Bigsby pastored Calvary from 1994-2006.
Rev. Moses Herring became the 3rd Pastor of Calvary in August 2007. He served as Calvary’s Pastor until June 2011. Calvary experienced significant financial and membership growth under Rev. Herring’s leadership.
Rev. Kelon Duke was installed as Calvary’s 4th pastor on April 22, 2012. Calvary’s membership has continued to grow and several building improvements have been made under his leadership. In January 2014, Pastor Duke introduced Calvary’s surname ‘The Church of Love.’
We thank God for calling Pastor Carl K. Manson to service and giving him the vision of Calvary Baptist Church of Glenwood. We also thank God for each Pastor that has shepherded us in ministering to the needs of Glenwood and the surrounding communities.
